Benefits of Human Foods for Dogs: Carrots and Salmon

There are plenty of human foods that are great for your pup. From fruits and vegetables to meat and fish, dogs can benefit from the numerous nutrients found in foods that us humans eat and enjoy. In this segment of Benefits of Human Foods for Dogs, we will briefly unpack the benefits of feeding your dogs both salmon and carrots.

Salmon

Salmon is a great human food that your dog can eat. It is high in nutrients like Vitamin B, Potassium, and Selenium, which promote digestive health, soft skin and coat, and reduces inflammation.

Unfortunately and inevitably as dogs age, they begin to feel joint pains. However, adding salmon to their weekly diet can help aid and delay joint pain in your dog later on in life.

Salmon is the only meat that provides high volumes of omega-3, which supports your dog's soft skin and fur while also protecting your dog from the heat of the suns rays. In addition to these benefits, salmon is also a great source of protein and promotes vision and eye health.

Some tips for feeding your dog salmon:

  1. Always cook the salmon before feeding to your dog.
  2. If you choose to buy canned salmon, ensure that it is packaged in water.

Carrots

Carrots are a great source of fiber, antioxidants, vitamins A and K, and minerals. Before feeding your dog carrots, be sure to wash them thoroughly. Carrots benefit your dog's eye and vision health, including night vision health.

Carrots can serve as a solo snack, or can be paired with other safe human ingredients for your dog. However, it is important to note that carrots have natural sugars, and if fed to your dog too much, can lead to weight gain.

Raw carrots are a great form of enrichment, as they satisfy chewing instincts in dogs. But, if your dog is not fond of raw carrots, consider cooking them for a softer texture. Cooked carrots provide more nutrients than raw carrots.

Always check with your veterinarian before feeding your pet new foods. Be sure that they have a balanced diet and not to feed snacks to your pet more than 10% of the time they eat. 90% of your dog's diet should be from a balanced dog food diet

Wrap Up: We Have the Treats at Pups and Such!

Both carrots and salmon have many benefits to dogs. Salmon is rich in protein (even richer than chicken!) which benefits your dog's lean muscle growth and maintenance. Salmon is also high in omega-3, the only meat that contains high volumes of it. Omega-3 is a factor that influences your dog's soft fur and coat.

Carrots are high in fibers and antioxidants, supporting digestive health, eye and vision health. You can feed your dog raw or cooked carrots. Cooked carrots are higher in nutrients than raw carrots. They are high in sugar and should be fed in moderation due to the potential of weight gain. Carrots support heart health by being high in fibers that manage cholesterol levels.
